Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology is a highly specialized field and a relatively new sub-specialty of gynecology. It requires in-depth training in order to assure that these particular age groups are evaluated and treated in a manner that is very different from adult women. There are a limited number of physicians around the country who have this expertise. Our physicians have been practicing this subspecialty for many years and show a sensitivity and understanding that only those practitioners who have specific training in this field can display. The Red Vulva
The red vulva (outside parts) is the most common reason for a visit to the pediatric gynecologist. A young lady can have symptoms starting at a very early age. She can complain of burning, itching, feeling sore, discomfort with urination, and redness. There are many causes for these symptoms so don't assume that it is always a yeast infection or a bladder infection (UTI). The causes can include yeast and bacterial infections, skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and lichen sclerosis, atopic dermatitis (reaction to something in the environment), to list a few. A thorough history and physical exam will help to determine the cause so that the proper treatment can be recommended.
Labial adhesions, genital bleeding, and early pubertal development are some of the other conditions that children can develop.
